Giles HavergalΓÇÖs is not the first theatre adaptation of Brighton Rock. It was produced on the stage in 1943, starring Richard Attenborough in the role that was to bring him acclaim in the film version four years later. Havergal also adapted and starred (that's him, above left) in GreeneΓÇÖs Travels with My Aunt, which played in the West End and in New York. On Broadway last year there was a stage version of The Third Man, which was also turned into the classic British film of 1949 for which the novelist wrote the screenplay. Indeed, Greeneland has provided film-makers with rich pickings. The Heart of the Matter, Our Man in Havana, The Comedians and The Honorary Consul have all been filmed, and there have been two versions each of The End of the Affair (most recently in 1999 with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore) and The Quiet American (the first starring Michael Redgrave in 1958, the second Michael Caine, pictured right, in 2002).
